Still life For this still life of my brother I used a lot of hatching with different grades to get each part to stand out and not blend as one.
To start off I used a 2H grade to the simple outlines of the body, chair and magazine. I then used a B grade and used a hatching technique at different angles on different parts of his head, I did these quite close together so the hair appeared thicker and darker.
For the housecoat I went for a harder grade of H to get a lighter grey colour. I hatch this again and built up the layers a little bit, so it wasn’t too dark. For the sofa chair I did some longer hatch lines on side that was in the foreground lightly into the white of the paper, as i wanted the subject to be the focal point and didn’t want that part of the chair in the way of the piece.
